Frequently Asked Questions

What services do you offer, and which projects are outside your scope?

If you can dream it, we can make it. Upcycling pieces that you’ve thrifted, altering clothing that you love, embroidering or beading on your favorite pieces, or making something entirely new. If you’re inspired or need an original gift, I want to help make it reality. However, I don’t have heavy duty machinery to sew leather or heavy denim or other materials that would break my home sewing machine. Also, I really don’t crochet well.

Do you offer rush service?

Of course! If you need something that can be reasonably completed and returned to you within 48 hours, I’m happy to prioritize your project for a 30% rush fee.

How do I book an appointment, and do you take walk-ins?

To get started with any project, fill out the appropriate form or send me an email at altrdpvd@gmail.com.

What do I need for a fitting, and what should I wear?

For a formal fitting we’ll need all your layers and undergarments and shoes that you plan to wear with whatever’s being altered. Otherwise, there’s nothing special you need to prepare for!

How long does a fitting usually take?

For an alteration fitting, it should take no more than fifteen minutes. If we’re creating a garment from scratch, budget 45 minutes for a fitting and discussion.

Can you provide an estimate from photos or measurements before I visit?

Of course! I can do my best to give an estimate for the cost of your alteration. Sometimes factory made clothing has fun tricks and turns that require more than meets the eye, so I really won’t know everything there is to know until I can see the garment in person.

How do you price alterations, repairs, construction, and embroidery?

Alterations and repairs are based a set price list and construction, embroidery, and knitting service prices are based on labor and materials.

Do you have a minimum charge per item or per visit?

I do not! Bring me your mending piles, regardless of size.

What payment methods do you accept?

Cash, check, and Venmo.

Do you require a deposit for custom work or large projects?

Yes! I require a $50 nonrefundable deposit for formal alterations and custom art or knit pieces.

What is your policy on cancellations, rescheduling, and late pickups?

We’re all human, we’re all busy, I’m happy to be flexible. That said, there’s a thirty day pick-up/drop off window after your project has been completed. And so that I can plan my business and life, cancelations or reschedules less than five hours before our agreed time will result in a de-prioritization of your project. Thank you for your understanding!

Do you alter wedding dresses, suits, and formalwear, and what lead time do you need?

Yes, I do alter formalwear and it may take up to three weeks after the fitting for all changes to be complete. If a job is needed within a certain time frame, I’m happy to offer rush services for a 30% fee.

Can you tailor thrifted or vintage pieces without compromising their character?

Depending on the level of age and wear and damage of the particular garment, it varies. That said, if it’s possible to make it like new, I’ll do so and if there’s extensive damage or changes to be made, that’s an opportunity to create something new together!

Do you work with delicate or specialty fabrics like silk, lace, velvet, leather, or beaded textiles?

Specialty textiles will require a lot of hand sewing and careful attention, I’m more than happy to work with your delicate or special garments, just know that the increased level of attention and difficulty will result in a slightly higher price.

Do you replace zippers on coats, dresses, skirts, and jeans?

100%, bring me your frustrating and broken zippers!

Do you repair knitwear and mend moth holes in sweaters?

I’m so sorry you’ve had to come here for this question. Holes in our favorite cozy knits are so frustrating. I would be honored to restore your favorite pieces back to lovely, working condition.

Do you offer both invisible mending and visible mending, and how do I choose between them?

Sometimes a garment chooses for us! Not all patches or mends can be made completely invisible. It can often come down to a matter of preference and what’s possible depending on the mend. I’ll always be happy to offer different solutions and work towards creating a garment that you’re excited to wear again.

Do you offer gender-affirming tailoring and fit adjustments?

Literally nothing would make me happier. Let’s make your dream wardrobe.

For embroidery, can you stitch on items I already own?

I can add embroidered or beaded embellishments to most garments, on a case by case basis would I determine that a garment isn’t a good candidate for embroidery.

Can you match thread colors or provide thread samples before stitching?

While I won’t have access to the exact thread color that was used to craft the original garment, I will get as close as I can. I’m happy to provide photo samples before the work gets underway.

Do you take small-batch embroidery or sewing projects for brands or designers?

Absolutely! Send your ideas and needs to altrdpvd@gmail.com.

Do you offer mail-in services for repairs or embroidery, and how does that process work?

While not logistically easy to conduct, I know the Washington based company, the FXRY, takes mail-in repairs. I do not take mail-in projects at this time.

Do you serve clients outside Rhode Island or offer virtual consultations?

No virtual consultations for me please! Happy to meet within reasonable driving distance of Rhode Island.

Do garments need to be cleaned before you work on them?

I’m not going to tell you how to live your life, but please don’t bring me dirty clothes.

What happens if I need a small tweak after pickup?

Send me a message! I will do my best to make it right.

Do you keep my measurements on file for future projects?

Bodies change! I won’t keep your information on file but if we work together with any amount of regularity, I won’t need to take new measurements each time.

Do you teach workshops or private lessons?

Absolutely! Feel free to reach out to me directly with your ideas or group needs! altrdpvd@gmail.com
