Custom Tote Bag

Project Spotlight: Elevating the Everyday Pocket Tote

We’ve all seen them: the classic, sturdy basic everyday bags found in the aisles of big box stores. They are functional and reliable, but they lack a certain je ne sais quoi. I took one of these blank slates and decided to give it a farmers market upgrade through the art of embroidery.

The goal wasn't just to add color, but to create a textured, colorful produce sampler that felt like a boutique find rather than a big-box purchase.

The Process

Tiny Details, Big Impact

The Blueprint

I started with custom-cut, miniature produce stencils of things like tiny root veggies, summer berries, and fall gourds, to create a balanced, organic layout across the canvas.

The Base

Using water soluble stencils, I laid out the patern. This provided a precise guide for the needlework.

The Elevation

I then went back in with hand-embroidery to add life. I used back stitches for the skin and cap of an eggplant, French Knots for strawberry seeds, and laced running stitches to create peach skin color variation.

The Result

A durable, washable tote that bridges the gap between utilitarian pocket tote bag and custom textile art.

Why settle for mass-produced when you can have a masterpiece?

By combining the precision of stenciling with the tactile warmth of hand-stitching, a $15 bag became my favorite everyday bag. I get compliments on it regularly, but more importantly, I feel a swell of joy that only teensy tiny produce can give me every time I look at it. Send me your favorite basics, and I’ll transform them with custom stenciling and hand-stitched details. From produce to portraits, let’s make your everyday items unique!
